International Deathmatch and Hardcore Wrestling Update for March 12th, 2018

IWA Midsouth’s Deathmatch season starts, Masashi Takeda defends successfully, GCW announces tons of new matches and much more

Edit: An earlier version said that Tom Lawler would be pulling out of the Bloodsport show but that is not the case. Sorry for any confusion.

IWA Midsouth really seems to be on fire in a lot of ways at the moment. They have  a secure location and have been putting on 6-8 shows a month and a streaming deal with Powerbomb TV that broadcasts twice a month. Because they can put on multiple shows a weekend your seeing more 2-day storylines to set up matches and attendance seems to be up while they’re bringing in larger stars like Michael Elgin.

Truthfully it is almost too much to keep up with.

This past weekend they held their Prince of the Deathmatch show, this is the precursor to King of the Deathmatch, which is May 12th and 13th, and the winner is entered into KOTDM. Amazing Maria won and became the first female to win as well. She, as well as JC Rotten and Mike Roach, have been entered into the KOTDM with the first match announced as JC Rotten vs. Nick Gage.

Screen Shot 2018-03-12 at 11.16.55 AM

During a match with JC Rotten Tripp Cassidy was severely injured on his left shoulder after taking a bump into a pane of glass that wasn’t tempered. He wrote that it almost severed a main artery and looked like it. His shoulder was entirely flared out.

The IWA MS King of the Deathmatch Tournament has announced most of the 16 competitor. They are

Nick Gage
Masada
Aeroboy
Markus Crane
Shlak
Eric Ryan
Dale Patricks
Rickey Shane Page
G-Raver
Miedo Xtremo
Ciclope
Neil Diamond Cutter
Amazing Maria
JC Rotten
Mike Roach

It will be a two day event as in previous years but I have to comment and say the previous few KOTDM events have been littered with 4 ways in the first round. I personally don’t like multi-man deathmatches. They remove any of the drama and degenerate into car crashes where the camera can’t even catch all of it. If they have 2 full nights of events hopefully it will be all singles matches. It is this idea that helps GCW develop stars in my opinion.

Many thanks to Twitter user @vicvonerich  for these IWA MS results and notes. He has a PWTees store at Prowrestlingtees.vom/indypower and you can find his blog at travnvichorror.WordPress.com.

***Japanese Deathmatch News***

On March 1st Out Deluxe on Fuji TV did a highlight reel of deathmatches focusing on Freedoms. They showed clips from an older Masada match, the Mad Dog vs. Fukimoto match from Bloody Christmas and other Kasai matches.

Screen Shot 2018-03-02 at 12.57.51 PM

Masashi Takeda defeated Ryuchi Sekine on March 12th for his 5th defense of the BJW Deathmatch Title. Based on interviews his nest challenger should be Abdullah Kobayashi but that won’t likely be for 6 weeks or more. The only person on the roster I could see as a real candidate to win the title is Masaya Takahashi who he won the belt off of in August of 2017.

Screen Shot 2018-03-13 at 8.28.59 AM

At the March 11th Freedoms show in Osaka Masashi Takeda debuted a new gimmick called “The Great Fisherman” where he is a businessman.

Screen Shot 2018-03-13 at 8.19.58 AM

The March 22nd Freedoms Korakuen Hall main event between Kenji Fukimoto and Masashi Takeda will be a 4 Corners of Pain + Alpha Deathmatch. The last time they had a singles match was the infamous scissors board match.

They’ve also announced the Freedoms vs. BASARA 6 amn tag match will be a TLC + Lighttubes Deathmatch.

Masashi Takeda, along with Yuko Miyamoto, will compete on the Hagure IGF International Hataage-sen show at Shinjuku Face on April 4th.

On April 30th there will be a WWS Mr. Pogo Rememberance show featuring Jun Kasai.

Freedoms and Basara will have a feud of some sort starting with the March 22nd Korakuen Hall show that will feature a 6 man deathmatch between Jun Kasai, Takashi Sasaki & Daisuke Masaoka vs Isami Kodaka, FUMA & Ryūichi Sekine

On February 26th Masashi Takeda was victorious at Capture Tokyo, a worked MMA event at the MONstar Basement. The next Capture Tokyo show will be April 25th.

Jun Kasai and a mystery partner will wrestle in a “drinking deathmatch” for DDT at Shinjuku Face on March 14th.

Pro Wrestling Tees is now selling Big Japan merchandise that you can find at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/bigjapan. They launched an English store based in Japan last year but the shipping charges were too much for most fans.

Yuji Okabayashi isn’t wearing his sling anymore so thats a good sign of recovery.

Big Japan is following through with their emphasis on health as Daisuke Sekimoto, Jake Numazawa and others attended a seminar on how to take better care of their bodies.

Yuko Miyamoto was in attendance at the BJ-X store so they are selling merchandise for non-contracted wrestlers.

Abdullah Kobayashi doesn’t have matches listed for this month.

Stardom is promoting an exploding bat match in the future, It will be Oedo Tai vs. Tam Nakano and her partners.

Here’s some cool photos of the man.

The Chicago GCW Show on May 11th is going to be a joint show with Freelance Underground putting each side against the other in a series of matches. It’ll be at the Baderbrau Breery. The night after on arch 12th will be a full GCW branded show with deathmatches.

GCW has added Penta 0M vs. Nick Gage to the Spring Break show which is a pretty big announcement.

GCW has entered into a sponsorship with “A Shot of Wrestling”, a podcast.

GCW will in fact be running the NGI 3 in September.

A new home location for GCW is very close.

Walter vs. Filthy Tom Lawler was added to Bloodsport. Lawler broke his arm since then but is still committed to the event.

Scotty Vortex has been added to the Red Means Green Compound show on March 17th. Vortex is a CZW veteran who was big in the deathmatches for the company. This is classic GCW, bringing back talent that fans always wondered why CZW stopped booking them.

Joey Janella’s Spring Break has sold over 900 tickets so far.

Matt Riddle’s Bloodsport and Spring Break have added matches that are listed below.

GCW announced a location and date for the Tournament of Survival 3 event. It’ll be June 2nd at “Slaughtrhouse Farms” in Freehold, NJ. This will be an outdoors show and they’re already promising a unique spectacle. Zandig is still listed as being involved so we might see that Shlak vs. Zandig match.

Sage Sin won the Goddess of Gore Women’s Deathmatch tournament defeating Ludark Shaitan in the finals. Sage Sin is the daughter of XPW wrestler Supreme.

The Vicious Outcast Wrestling show on April 13th is shaping up to be an insane event as usual. They’re announcing tons of matches and each match has a pretty unique stipulation attached.

Whacks, the former CZW photographer who also wrestled in deathmatches, lost a large portion of his thumb while working in his house. He has a Gofundme campaign here https://www.gofundme.com/56k65k0

Credit for results and upcoming news go to BahuFMW at bahufmw.com, pro-wrestling365.com, purolove.com and puroresuspirit.com, Dramatic DDT at https://dramaticddt.wordpress.com/ as well as the promotions websites. Sorry for bad formatting and possibly bad translations, I am simply collection information from a lot of sources on “Independent” and deathmatch promotions. I like to shine a spotlight and what isn’t covered elsewhere so there won’t be any NJPW, WWE, DDT, etc. talk.

Watching the Japanese deathmatch scene has never been easier but it isn’t perfect. Obviously the Real Hero Archive (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B5rK95X3mRiiSDNvTnQ0aUhWODg) has most every show you could ever imagine up there including most all Freedoms shows and a ton of classic hardcore puroresu.

The Mutton and the Ham Youtube Channel for a lot of classic FMW, IWA, BJW and also current BJW, Freedoms and odd show spots (https://www.youtube.com/user/MuttonAndTheHam)

The Official BJW Youtube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/bjwmovie) goes through moods of uploading a LOT of content. During the 2017 Ikkitousen they were uploading 2 or 3 tournament matches a day.

You can find a lot more Youtube channels by searching for the Japanese name of any of your favorite wrestlers (such as this match featuring Takeda and Kasai https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWU-NWQt_GI from an indy), a lot of handicam/phone footage or those notorious DVD only shows but there is little consistency.

BJW has a subscription streaming service called BJW Core and is 888 yen a month (about $8 USD) located at http://www.bjwcore.com

IWA Midsouth is available on http://powerbomb.tv

Bahu sells a TON of classic, hard to find hardcore puro as well as current Freedoms DVD’s. You can contact him at http://fmwwrestling.us/FMWLibrary.html

Freedoms shows are harder to get. The smaller shows, despite having crazy matches on the regular, are only filmed half the time and are only sold as DVD exclusives at shows (that I would buy if I had owned a DVD player in the past 6 years) so they rarely make it to Youtube or Real Hero. The larger shows from Korakuen are broadcast on Samurai TV on a 2-3 week delay without commentary and with muted music entrances and only 1 camera shots but for whatever reason these only appear sporadically on the normal avenues so good luck.
